What Should I Say in An Aesthetic Nurse Interview?

As with any critical interview, preparation can make or break the outcome. If you have the right interview expectations, examples to quickly share with interviewers, and a passion for the industry, you’re in an excellent position to be the ideal candidate.

What Are the Skills Needed to Be An Aesthetic Nurse?

Being an Aesthetic Nurse means you are a Registered Nurse (RN), which offers many choices in where you work and what you do. You might be administering injections or laser hair removal one day and assisting plastic surgeons or cosmetic dermatologists in services the next. No matter what, you’re providing detail-oriented services that require skills to administer safely and efficiently. To become an Aesthetic Nurse, there are steps to take, including specialized courses, degrees to obtain, and examinations to pass.

Examples of Aesthetic Nurse Interview Questions to Prepare For (With Answer Guidance)

Tell Me About Yourself

This initial ask can feel intimidating to start with. Your interviewer already has your resume in front of them, so they know the facts about your employment history. But they want to dig deeper, to learn more about you than what can be seen on a resume. This sets the tone for the interview, allowing you to set yourself up for success.

Spend some time going through things that help you stand out, such as leadership positions, relevant certifications, and experiences that gave you skills you can bring to the table. You can use these skills to help paint a clear picture of your passion for the industry and where you see things heading in the future (with the company you’re interviewing at).

Can You Describe a Time You Were in an Ethical Dilemma?

If you aren’t ready for questions that take some thinking to answer, it can be a lot harder to think everything through and offer a well-rounded response. A good rule of thumb with interview questions is to share a story that relates to the topic, ending with what you learned and how that experience shaped your decisions moving forward.

This question gives you a moment to share what you consider to be the most important ethical considerations for cosmetic treatments. You can expand on your considerations by including a story from past experiences. Tell the interviewer how the situation came about, what the dilemma was, your thought process moving through the situation, and how everything turned out.

What is an Example of a Time You Had to Educate a Patient?

This is an excellent time for you to showcase your ability to communicate effectively and stay up to date on aesthetic treatments. Try to come up with a memory that stands out to you – maybe you found an alternative treatment plan that was even better than the patient wanted.

No matter what, you can clarify that you understand the importance of educating every patient on any procedure. They should understand the treatment process, potential risks, and realistic results, and you should be able to answer any question and address every concern.

What Kind of Aesthetic Treatments Are Your Favorite to Administer?

An interviewer might ask this question to gauge your experience and comfort levels with treatments. This is an indicator of whether you can start administering treatments independently or if you’ll need additional training first. It can also help to determine if your interests align with services the medical spa needs help with.

Be sure that you are open about your experiences and preferences. Take some time to highlight what you like to spend your time doing. If you have any positive feedback from patients, this is also a great opportunity to share a relevant (yet brief) story.

How Do You Handle a Patient Having a Negative Reaction to a Treatment?

Your response to this helps the interviewer understand how you respond to a stressful situation when you are under pressure.

Feel free to take some time to address how important patient safety is to you. Include each step you would take to ensure the patient’s safety and wellness while remaining calm and in control of the situation. Explain how you might assess the situation, responding accordingly to the severity of the reaction and communicating the entire time. Again, this is a great time to share a story of a situation you’ve successfully navigated in the past.

How Do You Stay Up-To-Date on Aesthetic Nursing Industry Trends?

Aesthetic Nurses must know the latest in aesthetic technology, treatments, and medicine for patients to provide the best services. This expertise is what sets Aesthetic Nurses apart and lets them help patients find the right treatments to reach specific goals.

Your interviewer wants to know how well-versed you are in the industry and what you do to remain at the forefront of technology.

You can speak to:

  • Your certifications

  • Any continuing education courses

  • Research papers you read

  • Articles you subscribe to

  • Conferences you attend

  • Online resources you use

Make sure that your commitment to staying current is clear so that you can help patients make the most informed decisions about their care.

Can You Tell Me About a Time You Had a Patient Unhappy with Their Results and How You Handled It?

Even though your goal is to ensure that every patient loves their results, the reality of the industry is that you will encounter unhappy clients from time to time. This question allows you to speak about how you go about customer service when handling unhappy patients and communicate realistic expectations before any treatments happen to help prevent dissatisfaction.

Share an example of a time when you used professional communication and empathy to take the necessary steps to turn the situation around. Emphasize the steps you took, why you made your decisions, and the outcome and what you might do differently next time. Aesthetic Nurses should be calm under pressure, and these situations test your ability to be the best nurse you can be.

How Do You Go About Creating Custom Treatment Plans for Patients?

Part of any Aesthetic Nurse’s responsibility is understanding and managing different care plans for other patients. Your interviewer wants to know that you can create custom plans that cater to various needs.

You should be able to show your expertise in treatment offerings concerning the patient’s goals. It’s also important to discuss the significance of the patient’s condition and medical history to ensure they are an ideal candidate for treatment. Being able to show a correlation between the treatments offered and the solutions they provide for the right patient will help to place you in a strong position.

What is Your Experience Administering Botox and Fillers?

Unlike Botox injectors, Aesthetic Nurses can provide many services. Nurses have the proper certification and skillset to address many concerns, whereas Botox injectors and other specialists are limited with their treatment offerings. However, since Botox is one of the most popular, sought-after treatments, it’s very likely your interviewer will ask about your familiarity, process, and comfortability with cosmetic injectables.

Offer the interviewer a quick overview of your experience, any treatment types you’ve administered, and how long you’ve been doing so. Consider wrapping this question up with how passionate you are about the industry, helping others, and specifically offering your skillset to this particular company (and why).
